Elderly Care Services in Darwin & the Northern Territory
The Northern Territory has unique challenges for elderly care. A small but ageing population spread across 1.35 million square kilometres, extreme tropical heat, remote Indigenous communities with limited infrastructure, and a healthcare system that serves both urban Darwin and communities accessible only by light aircraft.
Approximately 28,000 Territorians are aged 65 and older β the smallest elderly population of any Australian jurisdiction. But what the NT lacks in numbers, it makes up for in complexity. This guide covers every government program, hospital service, community resource, tropical health consideration, and remote area support available to elderly Territorians and their families in 2026.
Government Programs
My Aged Care (National Gateway)
The starting point for all government-funded aged care. The NT's Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs) are based at Royal Darwin Hospital and Alice Springs Hospital, with outreach to remote communities via telehealth and visiting teams.
Phone: 1800 200 422 (MonβFri 8amβ8pm, Sat 10amβ2pm)
NT-specific note: Wait times for ACAT assessments in remote communities can be 6β12 weeks due to travel logistics. Request telehealth pre-assessment to start the process earlier.
Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
Entry-level home support for elderly Territorians. In the Darwin metro area, services are comparable to southern states. In remote communities, CHSP is often the primary support available.
- Domestic assistance, meals, personal care, transport, social support
- Remote delivery models: community-based support workers, visiting allied health teams
- NT providers: Anglicare NT, Somerville Community Services, Juninga, Top End Association for Mental Health
- Aboriginal-specific: Danila Dilba Health Service, Wurli-Wurlinjang, Sunrise Health Service
Home Care Packages (HCP)
Four levels of coordinated care for complex needs. NT wait times are generally shorter than southern states due to smaller population, but provider choice is limited in remote areas.
| Level | Support | Annual Budget | NT Wait Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic care needs | $10,300 | 1β2 months |
| 2 | Low-level care | $18,100 | 2β4 months |
| 3 | Intermediate care | $39,400 | 3β6 months |
| 4 | High-level care | $59,800 | 6β9 months |
Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Aged Care
30% of the NT population is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. First Nations people can access aged care assessments from age 50 (not 65). The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Programme funds culturally appropriate care in remote communities where mainstream services cannot operate.
- Flexible aged care places in remote communities (not tied to residential facilities)
- Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) deliver culturally safe care
- Interpreter services: Aboriginal Interpreter Service NT β (08) 8999 5511
DVA Services for Veterans
Darwin has a significant defence and veteran population due to RAAF Base Darwin and Robertson Barracks. DVA Gold and White card holders can access community nursing, home modifications, transport, and respite without going through My Aged Care.
DVA General Enquiries: 1800 555 254
RSL NT: (08) 8981 3650 | Vietnam Veterans Association NT: (08) 8981 1840

Remote & Regional NT
Aged care in remote NT communities faces challenges unmatched anywhere else in Australia. Communities may be accessible only by dirt road (impassable in the wet season) or light aircraft, with no resident doctor or pharmacist.
Critical: Wet Season Access
Between November and April, many remote communities become inaccessible by road. Elderly residents with medical emergencies rely on CareFlight or NT Emergency Services helicopter retrieval. Families should ensure emergency plans are in place BEFORE the wet season starts. Stock medications for at least 4 weeks ahead.

Flexible Aged Care in Remote Communities
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Programme funds services in communities where mainstream residential aged care is not available. Services may include:
- Community-based day centres with meals, social activities, and personal care
- In-home support from local Aboriginal health workers
- Culturally appropriate residential aged care beds in larger communities
- Visiting specialist services (podiatry, optometry, dental) on a rotating basis
Tropical Health Challenges for Elderly Territorians
Darwin's tropical climate creates specific health risks for elderly people that families in southern states don't face.
| Challenge | Risk | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Extreme Heat (OctβApr) | Heatstroke kills more Australians than all natural disasters combined. Elderly are most vulnerable due to impaired thermoregulation and medication interactions. | Air conditioning is essential (not optional). Check it works before build-up season. CHSP may fund cooling assistance. |
| Dehydration | Elderly people in Darwin need 2β3 litres of water daily in the build-up/wet season. Many don't feel thirsty until severely dehydrated. | Daily fluid intake monitoring. Encourage water with every meal and medication. Daily welfare calls can check hydration habits. |
| Cyclone Season (NovβApr) | Cyclone preparation requires physical effort many elderly cannot manage alone β securing windows, stocking supplies, evacuation. | Register with NT Emergency Services as a vulnerable person. Pre-position emergency supplies. Identify evacuation buddy. |
| Tropical Infections | Melioidosis (found in Top End soil) is dangerous for elderly and immunocompromised. Wound infections progress rapidly in tropical humidity. | Avoid contact with soil/mud, especially during the wet. Cover ALL cuts immediately. Seek medical attention for any wound that becomes red, hot, or swollen. |
| Mould & Respiratory Issues | Darwin's humidity (80β90% in the wet) causes aggressive mould growth in homes. Elderly with COPD or asthma are severely affected. | Run air conditioning or dehumidifiers. Check ceiling cavities, bathroom seals, and under-house areas. CHSP may fund home maintenance. |

NT-Specific Considerations
- β’ Mobile coverage gaps β Many remote communities have limited or no mobile coverage. Satellite phones or HF radio may be the only communication for elderly in remote areas.
- β’ Power outages β Cyclone season causes frequent outages. Battery-backup alarms and charged mobile phones are essential for elderly living alone.
- β’ NBN limitations β Many rural NT areas are on Sky Muster satellite NBN with latency issues. Phone-based services (like Kindly Call) work better than video-based solutions.
Digital Inclusion Programs
- β’ Be Connected β Free digital skills for over-50s. Courses at Darwin and Palmerston libraries. beconnected.esafety.gov.au
- β’ NT Library Tech Help β Free one-on-one digital assistance at Territory libraries. Booking recommended at larger branches.
