Services by Region

Greater Sydney is not one city when it comes to aged care. Each region has different demographics, hospital networks, and community services. We've broken it down so you can find what's near your parent.

Northern Beaches & North Shore

Mosman, Manly, Chatswood, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Hornsby

Demographics

Higher income, established communities with many long-term residents ageing in place. Strong neighbourhood networks but significant distances between suburbs along the peninsula. Many retirees are asset-rich but service access can be limited outside main centres.

Key Hospitals

  • • Royal North Shore Hospital — Major geriatrics and rehabilitation unit, St Leonards
  • • Northern Beaches Hospital — Emergency and aged care services, Frenchs Forest
  • • Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital — Geriatric assessment team, Hornsby

Local Contacts

Inner West & Eastern Suburbs

Leichhardt, Newtown, Bondi, Randwick, Marrickville, Surry Hills

Demographics

Dense, walkable suburbs with good public transport. Strong cultural diversity, especially Greek and Italian communities in the Inner West with older residents who have lived there for decades. Good access to medical specialists due to proximity to major hospital precincts.

Key Hospitals

  • • Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital — Major aged care and geriatric medicine unit, Camperdown
  • • Prince of Wales Hospital — Geriatric assessment, Randwick
  • • Sydney Eye Hospital — Critical for seniors with vision impairment

Local Contacts

Western Sydney

Parramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Auburn, Merrylands, Mount Druitt

Demographics

Australia's most culturally diverse region. While the overall population skews younger, there are significant elderly migrant communities — Arabic, Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, and Filipino — with distinct aged care needs. Language barriers are a major challenge for accessing services.

Key Hospitals

  • • Westmead Hospital — NSW's largest hospital, comprehensive geriatrics department
  • • Blacktown Hospital — Expanded aged care services, emergency department
  • • Cumberland Hospital — Mental health services for older adults
  • • Nepean Hospital — Aged care and rehabilitation, Penrith

CALD Communities — Culturally Specific Services

Liverpool, Campbelltown, Camden, Bankstown, Canterbury

Demographics

One of Sydney's fastest-growing corridors, especially around Camden and Oran Park. Rural fringes around Camden and Picton have isolated elderly residents who can be harder to reach.

Key Hospitals

  • • Liverpool Hospital — Major trauma centre with geriatric medicine, aged care assessment team
  • • Campbelltown Hospital — Recently expanded, aged care and rehabilitation
  • • Camden Hospital — Smaller facility with rehabilitation focus
  • • Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital — Geriatric assessment and falls prevention clinic

Demographics

Established suburban area with a significant proportion of residents who have aged in place over 30–40 years. The Sutherland Shire in particular has one of Sydney's highest median ages. Many elderly residents are widowed homeowners in houses that are now too large to manage but reluctant to leave the community they've known for decades.
