Elderly Care Services on the Sunshine Coast (2026)
The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's fastest-growing retirement destinations — and that growth is exposing serious gaps in aged care infrastructure. Over one in five residents is now over 65, rising to nearly one in three in Noosa Shire. The gap between demand and service capacity is widening every year.
The coast itself has reasonable services along the Caloundra–Maroochydore–Noosa corridor, but the hinterland — Maleny, Nambour, Kenilworth, Eumundi — is a different story. If your parent retired to a 5-acre block in Montville for the lifestyle, accessing aged care services when they need them can be genuinely difficult.

The Sunshine Coast by the Numbers
Services by Sub-Region
The Sunshine Coast stretches 60 km along the coast and inland to the Blackall Range. Services concentrate along the coastal strip, thinning rapidly into the hinterland. Here's what's available in each area.
Caloundra & Southern Sunshine Coast
Caloundra, Golden Beach, Pelican Waters, Currimundi, Aura, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains
Demographics
Caloundra is one of the Sunshine Coast's original retirement hotspots. Golden Beach and Pelican Waters have high proportions of over-70s in canal-side homes. Caloundra CBD has good walkability and public transport, but outlying suburbs (Beerwah, Glass House Mountains) are more isolated. The massive Aura development is bringing younger families but minimal aged care infrastructure.
Key Hospitals
- • Caloundra Hospital — Emergency, general medicine, rehabilitation. 75 beds. Minor injuries and stabilisation.
- • Sunshine Coast University Hospital — 35 min south via M1. The region's major hospital. Full geriatric assessment, emergency, surgical. Birtinya.
- • Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital — Adjacent to SCUH. Private geriatric and rehabilitation services.

Maroochydore & Central Coast
Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Alexandra Headland, Birtinya, Sippy Downs, Wurtulla
Demographics
The service hub of the Sunshine Coast. Maroochydore has the best concentration of medical specialists, allied health, and community services on the Coast. Buderim, perched on the hill above, is a popular retirement suburb with an older demographic and strong community networks. The new Maroochydore City Centre development is adding services. Birtinya hosts the Sunshine Coast University Hospital — the region's major acute care facility.
Key Hospitals
- • Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) — Birtinya. 738 beds, full ED, geriatric assessment, rehabilitation, specialist clinics. The primary hospital for the entire region.

Noosa & Northern Hinterland
Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin, Peregian Beach, Cooroy, Pomona, Eumundi, Kin Kin
Demographics
Noosa Shire has the highest proportion of over-65s on the entire Sunshine Coast — approaching 30% in some coastal areas. Many are retirees from Sydney and Melbourne who relocated for the lifestyle, now ageing far from family support networks. The hinterland towns (Cooroy, Pomona, Kin Kin) are beautiful but isolated, with minimal public transport and sometimes poor mobile reception.
Key Hospitals
- • Noosa Hospital — Private hospital, Noosaville. Emergency, general medicine, rehabilitation. 95 beds.
- • Gympie Hospital — 45 min north. Public hospital with ED and aged care services for northern hinterland residents.
- • SCUH Birtinya — 40 min south. Major public hospital for serious/acute care.
Hinterland Isolation Warning
Properties around Kin Kin, Black Mountain, and Federal have limited mobile coverage (Telstra only in some areas, no Optus/Vodafone). Landline infrastructure is ageing, and power outages during storms can cut off elderly residents for days. If your parent lives in the Noosa hinterland, a daily phone check can be their only regular human contact. See our guide to rural and regional loneliness.
Community Services
- • Noosa Leisure Centre — aqua aerobics, gentle exercise for seniors
- • Tewantin Noosa RSL — seniors social events, meals
- • Cooroy Men's Shed — woodwork, social connection

Nambour & Hinterland
Nambour, Woombye, Palmwoods, Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, Yandina, Kenilworth
Demographics
Nambour is the historical service centre for the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Once the region's main town, it was bypassed by the coastal growth and now has a lower socioeconomic profile than Maroochydore or Noosa. The Blackall Range towns (Maleny, Montville, Mapleton) attract tree-changer retirees, but steep winding roads and distance from major hospitals create real risk for elderly residents. Kenilworth, further inland, is extremely isolated.
Key Hospitals
- • Nambour General Hospital — Emergency, general medicine, mental health, rehabilitation. Major hospital prior to SCUH opening. Still provides significant inpatient and outpatient services.
- • Nambour Selangor Private Hospital — Rehabilitation and specialist services
- • Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital — Small community hospital, limited services, stabilisation and transfer
Community Services
- • Nambour Community Centre — seniors activities, exercise, social mornings
- • Maleny Neighbourhood Centre: (07) 5494 2272
- • Range Community Meals (Maleny/Montville) — delivered hot meals

Coolum & Coastal
Coolum Beach, Yaroomba, Mount Coolum, Marcoola, Mudjimba, Twin Waters, Pacific Paradise
Demographics
The mid-coast strip between Maroochydore and Noosa. Coolum Beach and surrounding suburbs have a strong retiree population, especially in beachside apartments and low-maintenance townhouses. The area lacks a local hospital — residents rely on SCUH (25 min south) or Noosa Hospital (20 min north). Good bus connectivity along the coastal road but limited services to hinterland.

- • Sunshine Coast University Hospital — 25 min south, Birtinya. Full emergency and geriatric services.
- • Noosa Hospital — 20 min north, Noosaville. Private, emergency and rehabilitation.
- • Nambour General Hospital — 20 min west. Emergency and aged care services.
